A Mobile Lifeline — Catheters Safeguarding Children’s Health
In the Department of Nephrology at Jiangxi Provincial Children’s Hospital, many pediatric patients with kidney disease require repeated peripheral venipuncture during treatment, resulting in considerable pain and discomfort. Recently, Head Nurse Hu Yun and the intravenous therapy team successfully placed mini midline catheters in several young children.
This technique—often referred to as a “mobile lifeline” for pediatric patients—significantly improves treatment comfort and overall care experience, providing a superior option for vascular access in intravenous therapy.
Lighting Up Hope for Pediatric Patients
“Nurse, my baby didn’t cry during the infusion this time!”
— A heartfelt expression from a parent.
Two-year-old Miaomiao (pseudonym), a child with nephrotic syndrome, requires frequent infusions of albumin, diuretics, and biologics. Previously, each infusion required locating a new peripheral vein, and repeated venipuncture left her little hands covered with needle marks, eventually causing severe needle-related fear.
“Whenever she saw the nurse approaching with a needle, she would start crying uncontrollably. My heart ached every time,” her mother recalled.
During this admission, however, the Nephrology Department, in collaboration with the Vascular Access Nursing Team, placed a thin and flexible mini midline catheter for Miaomiao. Inserted through her upper arm with the catheter tip positioned in the axillary vein, it can remain in place for up to four weeks.
“Mommy, it didn’t hurt this time! And this little ‘tube’ is hiding in my arm, so I can still play with my toys!”
Her innocent words serve as the most sincere recognition of this technique.

What Is a Mini Midline Catheter?

According to Li Hongxin, a vascular access specialist nurse at Jiangxi Provincial Children’s Hospital, a mini midline catheter is a type of peripheral venous catheter measuring 8–10 cm in length. It features a small diameter, soft material, and excellent biocompatibility. It is suitable for pediatric patients who require intermediate-duration intravenous therapy (1–4 weeks).
By placing a mini midline catheter, clinicians can achieve a “one-puncture solution,” eliminating the pain and trauma associated with repeated venipuncture. The catheter resides in a deep peripheral vein, offering low risks of infection and thrombosis, while allowing free movement of the joints. Children can write, play, and carry out daily activities comfortably and safely.
“Our goal is not only to treat the child’s illness, but also to provide emotional comfort,” said Head Nurse Hu Yun.
The mini midline catheter serves as a bridge that connects clinical technology with compassionate care, using both science and empathy to safeguard every child’s health.
